World Environment Day 2020
The World Environment Day (WED) is the United Nations day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment, which is marked every year on June 5th. The commemorations began in 1974.
The day involves raising awareness on emerging environmental issues from marine pollution, human overpopulation, global warming, sustainable consumption and wildlife crime.
The 2020 National celebrations to mark the World Environment Day were held on Friday, 5th June, 2020, at Ekaale Centre, Lodwar, Turkana County. This year’s global theme is Time for Nature while in Kenya, it has been domesticated to “Biodiversity for Sustainable Livelihoods” with the slogan, “Preserve, Restore and Conserve”. The CS Ministry of Environment and Forestry keriako Tobiko led the occasion.
Speaking at Ondiri Wetland, in Kiambu County when he led NEFOS-KENYA team in planting trees to commemorate World Environment Day, the Committee Secretary Dr. John Chumo said the Ministry of Environment and Forestry and its stakeholders are moving forward to ensure achievement of 10 percent forest cover or more by 2022.
During the event, NEFOS-KENYA donated tree seedlings in the support to restore and conserve Ondiri Wetland.
